S05 E23: The Story of USCT Soldier Cathay Williams with NPS Officer Kenya Finley

Private Cathay Williams was the only known woman to serve in the US Army as a Buffalo Soldier. Despite the prohibition against women serving in the military, Williams enlisted in the U.S. Regular Army under the false name of “William Cathay” in November of 1866.

Passing herself off as a man, she enlisted for a three-year period in the 38th U.S. Infantry Regiment.

NPS Officer Kenya Finley talked about Cathay’s remarkable life and achievements, focusing on areas of Cathay’s life that are not often discussed. Kenya also talked about the records accessed to reveal Cathay’s story.
