S06 E03: Black Homesteaders of the Midwest with Richard Edwards and Jacob Friefeld

The migration of our families is an important thing to know when researching your family. Historians and researchers talk so much about Black families in the South migrating to the North – but they also migrated to the West and Midwest.

African Americans successfully homesteaded in all the Great Plains states; building successful small communities and thriving towns. Black people created homes, farms, a “place,” and a society that were all their own.

Richard Edwards and Jacob Friefeld joined the show to discuss their research, the history of Black homesteaders, and their forthcoming book about Black Homesteaders in the Great Plains.
