There is a zeitgeist among American and British universities that profited from slavery either directly or indirectly. Some have set up scholarships. Others are intent on researching the lives of those who were either enslaved by the institutions or by academics and university senior management – including finding the descendants of the enslaved. some universities have erected monuments to the memories of the enslaved – or plan to do so. In this episode, we chat with our special guest, African American Research and genealogist Shelley Murphy, about a special project in Virginia – the University of Virginia’s Memorial to Enslaved Laborers.
Tune in to discover more about this project, the research involved, and why projects like this are so important.
