S03 E29: African American Genealogy: Researching Enslaved Ancestors in the Northern Colonies with Ric Murphy

Award-winning author Ric Murphy joined us to talk about his work researching enslaved ancestors in the northern colonies and states. He also briefly spoke about researching ancestors who were among the first Africans of Virginia.

We also chatted about creating research strategies too! Ric is the National Vice President for History for the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS). He is also an educator, historian, scholar, and lecturer who has presented to international audiences.

That was as always great to listen to 🙂 Around the 2nd half of program mentioned a previous enslaved woman went back to her maiden/previous name after ?death of husband – their children continued with their father’s last name. I had seen and heard this before – also of an example – if others were looking for her or that name – there would be connection or found, eg in the southern newspapers finding family- looking for eg mary Hamilton smith, married tom Welborn, previous “owner” enslaver bill Johnson.
